Lamine Yamal’s Ballon d’Or record already contains a line that Lionel Messi never managed. With his place on the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 award, confirmed on Tuesday, the Barça No.10 became the first player in the history of the prize to be nominated three times before turning 20 — a Lamine Yamal Ballon d’Or record that, as Barca Universal point out, not even Messi reached at that stage of his career.
He is 19, and he plays his first match since the shortlist landed on Wednesday night, when Barça open their Champions League campaign against Feyenoord.
The Lamine Yamal Ballon d’Or record: eighth, second, and now?
The trajectory is almost absurdly linear. Lamine finished eighth in the 2024 voting, climbed to second in 2025, and arrives at the 2026 edition as one of the leading contenders. Pau Cubarsí and Rodri join him on the list, while Pedri, Raphinha, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez were left off — our piece on the 2026 nominees and the snubs has the detail.
Rodri, the reigning World Cup Golden Ball winner, is reported to be among the main rivals for the trophy, along with Harry Kane. The winner will not be known until the ceremony later this year. What is already settled is the nomination record itself.
Eight titles before 20 — a count that outstrips the greats
Mundo Deportivo’s tally has Lamine on eight major honours at 19: a World Cup and a European Championship, both won as a starter for Spain, plus three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups with Barça.
By Mundo Deportivo’s count, that puts him ahead of every icon the game usually measures teenagers against: Messi had six trophies before he turned 20, Ronaldo five, Pelé three, and Di Stéfano, Cruyff and Maradona one apiece. Last season alone he produced 24 goals and 18 assists in 45 games for the club.
The one that is missing starts on Wednesday
There is exactly one gap, and it is the obvious one. Lamine has never won the Champions League, and his ceiling in the competition remains the 2025 semi-final defeat by Inter. Mundo Deportivo note a neat piece of timing: the 2027 final is scheduled for Madrid.
He was blunt about the target at the AFE awards gala last week and blunter still on the eve of the Feyenoord tie. “There is no greater motivation than the fact that the Champions League is the one left for you to win. It is the competition we have left to win,” he said, per Mundo Deportivo. “We have great players like Rodri, Gordon and Adeyemi, and we are going to try.”
‘I have a lot of chances, but I am not going to beg’
Asked directly whether he deserves the Ballon d’Or, Lamine declined to campaign for himself. “First of all, it does not depend on me, it depends on you,” he told the press, as reported by Mundo Deportivo. “The work we have done with the team and with the national side has been incredible and, if it happens, the first thing I will be is grateful to my club and my country. I think I have a lot of chances, but we will see.”
He also spoke about the armband. Lamine is fifth in Barça’s captaincy order this season, behind club captain Raphinha, and called it a source of pride. “Even though I am 19, I will try to give my best for the team,” he said. There is more from that media day in our write-up of Tuesday’s press conference.
A Kopa Trophy hat-trick is also live
Lamine and Cubarsí are also among the ten nominees for the 2026 Men’s Young Talent of the Year, the Kopa Trophy. Lamine has won it in each of the last two editions, and a third would complete a hat-trick.
First, though, Feyenoord. Kick-off at the Spotify Camp Nou is 18:45 CEST (17:45 BST), and our predicted line-up and team news has the shape Hansi Flick is expected to pick.
