Julián Álvarez Only Wants Barça — but Atlético Are Holding Firm
When Julián Álvarez walked back into Atlético Madrid’s training ground on Monday morning, the beaming World Cup winner was nowhere to be seen. The Argentine forward dutifully completed his pre-season medicals alongside Marcos Llorente and Álex Baena, but his mind — according to the Spanish press — is already somewhere else entirely: the Spotify Camp Nou.
For weeks the murmur around the Blaugrana has been that Barça want a new centre-forward, and that Álvarez sits at the very top of the shortlist. On Monday that pursuit turned combustible, with reports in Spain claiming the 26-year-old has told those around him he wants only a move to Barcelona this summer — and that he is ready to dig his heels in to force it through.
Why Julián Álvarez has run out of patience
Mundo Deportivo reported that Álvarez was left fuming when he returned from his holidays to discover that neither head coach Diego Simeone — said to have travelled to Ibiza for a couple of days — nor chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín were on hand to discuss his situation. According to the same outlet, the striker told those present in the building not to count on him and warned that he would down tools until his position was resolved.
The frustration did not appear out of nowhere. Earlier on Monday, per information from Jijjantes FC cited by Mundo Deportivo, Álvarez held a meeting of more than two hours with his representatives to map out his strategy for the weeks ahead. He first made his desire to leave public during this summer’s World Cup, and those close to him insist that stance has not softened.
Atlético’s blunt response
Atlético, for their part, are not budging. Barça Universal, relaying Diario AS, reports that the Rojiblancos have no intention of selling to a direct LaLiga rival, still regard Álvarez as central to their plans, and want the forward to apologise for his recent comments and refocus on the season ahead. Tellingly, Álvarez and Simeone are not expected to sit down together until Wednesday, leaving the stand-off unresolved for now.
What it means for Barça
None of this guarantees anything. No fee has been agreed, Atlético hold every card while the player is under contract, and the summer window does not shut until 31 August. What is clear is that Barça’s appetite for a genuine number nine is real, particularly with Ferran Torres the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain that could reshape Hansi Flick’s forward line.
Barcelona’s summer recruitment has leaned on wide attackers such as Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, yet a specialist central striker has been the missing piece since Robert Lewandowski departed for Chicago Fire. It is that gap Álvarez’s camp believe he is ideally suited to fill, which only sharpens his determination to engineer a move before the deadline.
For now, the picture is a familiar one for Culers: a player who wants the shirt, a selling club determined to say no, and a saga that a fortnight of the transfer window will either resolve or leave hanging. Álvarez has made his feelings plain. Whether Barcelona can turn that willingness into a deal is another matter entirely.
