Jan Virgili Joins Club Brugge as Barcelona Bank Sell-On Windfall

Former Barcelona academy winger Jan Virgili is set to join Club Brugge, and a shrewd sell-on clause means the Blaugrana will pocket a welcome windfall from the deal. The 20-year-old is moving to the Belgian side for €12m, with Barça due around €4.8m of that fee.

How Barcelona profit from the Jan Virgili deal

When the Catalans sold Virgili to Mallorca last summer for roughly €3.5m, they wisely kept 40% of any future sale. According to Mundo Deportivo, Mallorca’s relegation to the Segunda División dropped his release clause to €12m — it would have been €30m in the top flight — and Champions League-bound Brugge triggered it. Mallorca bank €7.2m and Barça collect the remaining €4.8m, taking their total earnings from Virgili to about €8.3m. It is a tidy piece of Barça’s summer transfer business for a player who never made a competitive first-team appearance.

The move came together quickly after Virgili starred in Mallorca’s 3-0 friendly win over PSG on Wednesday, scoring a fine goal and adding an assist. Ajax had looked the likeliest destination before Brugge stepped in with the buyout figure. Barça could have re-signed the winger for that same €12m but opted against it.

After one standout campaign in the Juvenil A and the filial, Virgili moves on again — this time leaving Barcelona a little richer for having planned ahead.
