Barcelona Youngest XI Ever: Flick Breaks a Camp Nou Record

Hansi Flick did not set out to make history on Thursday night, but his team sheet did it anyway. This was the Barcelona youngest XI on record at the Spotify Camp Nou — an average age of just 23.18 years — and it beat Athletic Club 2-0 without ever really being troubled.

The figure comes from journalist Oriol Jové, cited by Mundo Deportivo. Until Thursday, the mark belonged to a side Pep Guardiola sent out against BATE Borisov. That it fell to a team winning a La Liga home opener, rather than a rotated XI in a dead rubber, is the part worth pausing on.

How the Barcelona youngest XI was built

The arithmetic explains itself. Only Raphinha, Barcelona’s captain, was born in the twentieth century — 1996. Joan García, Eric García and Anthony Gordon were all born in 2001, Gerard Martín and Pedri in 2002, Fermín López in 2003.

Then there is the class of 2007. Flick started four of them: Pau Cubarsí, Marc Bernal, Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal. Four teenagers in a first-choice XI in a competitive league fixture. Most clubs would consider one of those a gamble.

The composition tells a second story. Seven of the eleven came through the Blaugrana’s youth football, per Mundo Deportivo, and only Raphinha and Gordon were foreign players. Pedri and Joan García lined up as full Spain internationals.

Xavi Espart, the 19-year-old tipping the scales

The biggest single contributor to that average is the one nobody predicted in June. Espart has started both league games at left-back and played every minute of each, having previously played on the right and, in pre-season, as an inside forward and a holding midfielder. Against Athletic he finished the night in midfield next to Rodri.

A central midfielder by training, from Vilassar de Mar, he spent the summer as one of the standout players at the Under-19 European Championship, which Spain won. Mundo Deportivo now calls him Flick’s unexpected signing of the window, and it is hard to argue. We covered his promotion to the No. 12 shirt earlier this month, when it still looked like a squad decision.

Flick’s admiration is not new. After Espart’s debut against Newcastle United last season, he reached for a comparison most teenagers would rather not carry. “When I watch Xavi play, I really like his confidence on the ball. He reminds me of Philipp Lahm, as he can play as a ‘6’ or a ‘2’. I like seeing him with and without the ball,” he said, in quotes carried by Barça Universal. After Thursday’s win, Barça Blaugranes reported Flick admitted to being surprised by how quickly he has settled.

The youngest squad in La Liga

The record XI is no outlier. Barcelona carry the youngest squad in La Liga by average age — 24.2 years, level with Levante — and across Europe’s big five leagues only four clubs are younger: Auxerre (23.6), Parma (23.4), Toulouse (22.5) and Strasbourg (22).

Just five players are over 30: Wojciech Szczęsny (36), João Cancelo (32), Dominik Livaković (31), Andreas Christensen and Rodri (both 30). Three of them arrived this summer, which is the tell: experience has been bought in deliberately rather than accumulated. Gordon (25) and Karim Adeyemi (24) fill the middle band Deco has long argued a squad needs. Eleven players are under 20.

What it means for Flick’s season

Youth is not a strategy on its own, and 23.18 will look less charming in February if the legs go. But three of those under-20s — Lamine, Cubarsí and Bernal — already carry serious top-level mileage at 19, which is not the same as being raw.

The early evidence is good: two matches, two wins, seven goals scored and none conceded, after the 5-0 at Elche and Thursday’s 2-0, in which Raphinha opened the scoring and Fermín López added the second. Our player ratings from the Athletic win had few complaints. The Champions League league phase, which begins with a trip to Sabah FK in Azerbaijan, will ask harder questions.

For now, Flick has broken a Camp Nou age record set by Guardiola and won comfortably doing it. If the average creeps lower this season, nobody will complain.
