Barcelona vs Al Ahly: The Gamper Comes Home to Camp Nou

Four years is a long time to wait for a party. The Joan Gamper Trophy has been staged at Montjuïc, on pre-season tours and in front of half-full temporary homes, but it has not been played at the Spotify Camp Nou since 2022. On Wednesday night it comes home. Barcelona vs Al Ahly kicks off at 20:00 CEST in the 61st edition of the club’s traditional curtain-raiser, and around 35,000 tickets had already been sold by Tuesday evening, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The football is almost beside the point. This is the night Hansi Flick’s squad is formally presented to its own supporters for the first time in the 2026-27 season — the first full campaign back at a rebuilt Camp Nou — with the new signings walking out, the new captains introduced and a speech from the man now wearing the armband. Then, four days later, the real thing starts at Elche.

The homecoming, and the new faces

Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi fronted the official promotional photocall with the trophy on Tuesday, which tells you where the club wants the attention. Both will get their first taste of the Camp Nou crowd. So, in a different way, will Rodri: officially a Barça player as of Tuesday afternoon, he is expected to be part of the pre-match presentation but not the match itself, having not yet trained with the group.

There is an extra layer to the ceremony this year. Flick has named Raphinha, Eric García and Pedri as his captains on a provisional basis, with the squad vote deferred until the transfer window shuts, and it is Raphinha who addresses the stadium. For a group that lost Ronald Araújo and Marc-André ter Stegen inside a fortnight, hearing a new voice on the microphone will feel like a genuine changing of the guard. Ticket prices run from €55 for the basic pack up to €375 for VIP seats, with the club running promotions to fill the bowl.

Team news: Pedri and Gavi back in the mix

Barça arrive off a 5-2 win over FC Basel at the weekend, a game that neither Pedri nor Gavi travelled for as they worked through individual loading plans. Both have since been fully integrated into collective sessions at the Ciutat Esportiva, per Barça Universal, so a first appearance in front of the home crowd is plausible even if minutes are managed carefully. Academy midfielder Xavi Espart, who impressed against Basel, returned to training on Tuesday after a rest day, and a cluster of La Masia players — among them Ebrima Tunkara and Hamza Abdelkarim — continue to work with the first team.

Frenkie de Jong remains unavailable with the knee ligament injury being treated conservatively, and Roony Bardghji is a long-term absentee after ACL surgery. With no senior centre-forward signed yet, the interesting question is who Flick uses through the middle — a rehearsal that matters rather more than the scoreline.

Barcelona vs Al Ahly: who are the visitors?

Not a token opponent. The Cairo club are the most decorated side in African football and, by their own count, one of the most decorated anywhere: their website lists 156 titles, including 45 Egyptian league championships, 39 Egyptian Cups and 12 CAF Champions Leagues, the most in each competition. Exact totals vary depending on which historic tournaments a governing body recognises, but the scale is not in dispute. This is their first visit to the Camp Nou.

They come in transition. Last season brought only the Egyptian Super Cup, and this summer they lost winger Trezeguet to Saudi side Al-Riyadh and midfielder Aliou Dieng to Valencia. Their marquee reply was Algerian striker Mounsef Bakrar, a €3m signing who scored 18 goals for Dinamo Zagreb. There is a Barça link, too: young forward Hamza Abdelkarim arrived in Catalonia from Al Ahly.

The bit that actually counts

Nobody will remember the result. What they will remember is the noise when Rodri is introduced, the reception for Spain’s world champions on their first night home, and whether Flick’s side look like a team ready for a title defence rather than one still waiting on a No. 9. The Gamper is a dress rehearsal, and the show opens on Sunday at Elche.
