Barcelona Captaincy Shake-Up: Raphinha Leads a New Guard
For two seasons the Barcelona captaincy told a simple story: Marc-André ter Stegen wore the armband, Ronald Araújo inherited it, and Frenkie de Jong stood ready behind them. Within a few short weeks of the summer window, all three of those certainties have wobbled — and the Blaugrana head into 2026-27 needing to decide, quickly, who leads the dressing room.
The question of who inherits real authority is suddenly one of the most intriguing storylines of Hansi Flick’s third full season. With senior leaders leaving and others sidelined, the hierarchy that steadied the club through its Camp Nou rebuild is being redrawn on the fly, and the men Flick trusts to carry it are not necessarily the ones supporters expected.
Why the Barcelona captaincy is in flux
The reshuffle has been forced by departures. Ter Stegen, the former club captain, has joined Ajax on loan, while Araújo — the man who took the armband from him — is closing in on a season-long move to Liverpool. De Jong, the vice-captain, remains at the club but is working back from a serious knee injury sustained at the 2026 World Cup, an absence expected to stretch into the opening weeks of the campaign.
That leaves Flick without two of his most influential voices and temporarily without a third. Next in the official captaincy order is Raphinha, with Pedri — still only in his early twenties — behind him, and much of the squad younger still. The leadership load has to be spread somewhere.
Raphinha steps forward
Into that vacuum steps Raphinha. The Brazilian was already part of the captaincy group, but a report from Barça Universal, citing SPORT, says his standing is set to grow further. His competitive edge, his rapport with the younger players and his year-round commitment have long made him one of the most respected figures in the room — armband or not. For a group leaning heavily on academy graduates and new signings, that kind of proven, vocal senior professional matters, and Raphinha looks the natural candidate to become this side’s emotional centre.
Could Rodri join the leadership group?
There may yet be reinforcements. Barcelona are pushing to sign Manchester City’s Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, and the same reports suggest the Spain midfielder could quickly become a leader should the deal go through. Barça Universal says Pep Guardiola, who coached Rodri for years at City, has spoken warmly of the club’s project, while Barça Blaugranes reported that Real Madrid tabled an offer Rodri “couldn’t refuse” only for him to pick Catalonia instead.
All of it remains unconfirmed, and none of it should be read as a done deal. But if Rodri does arrive, Flick would gain not only a world-class holding midfielder but another senior voice at precisely the moment the club is short of them.
For now, the armband question is open in a way it has not been for years. Araújo’s expected exit removes the current captain, Ter Stegen is gone and De Jong is recovering. Whoever wears it first, the direction of travel is clear: this is fast becoming Raphinha’s dressing room, with the tantalising possibility of a Ballon d’Or winner alongside him. How Flick formalises the Barcelona captaincy over the coming weeks will tell us plenty about the team he wants to build.
